SHATKARMAS
– Cleansing Processes
Shatkarma, or the cleansing process,
is the first step of Hath Yoga. It is a unique means
of cleansing the inside of the human body of all its
accumulated toxins and dirt.
Shatkarmas are as follows:
- Kunjala: Also known as Gajakarnee,
it involves filling the stomach with warm water and
bringing it out effortlessly.
Benefits: It is highly
beneficial in stomach disorders like indigestion,
gastric troubles etc.
- Neti: The process of
cleansing and purifying the nasal passages. Practices
included in these categories are Sutra Neti (Thread
Exercise) and Jala Neti (Water Doos). Jalaneti should
be followed by the Bhastrika to eliminate the water
has been left in the nose.
Benefits: These exercises improve the eyesight and
are an effective treatment for cold, cough, asthma,
headache, forgetfullness etc.
- Bhastrika: A breathing
technique for purifying the frontal region of the
brain. Blowing out and inhaling forcefully like the
bellows of an iron monger.
Benefits: The practice of Bhastrika drains out water
from the nostrils.
- Trataka: To fix one’s gaze
on any given object or on at one point.
Benefits: It removes all defects of the eyesight.
It also enhances the power of concentration.
- Nauli: Rotating the rectus abdominis
rapidly in a circular motion. A method of massaging
and strengthening the abdominal organs.
- Bhaghee (The Tiger Exercise): The
advantage of this exercise is that as a result of
the purging of waste matter, all dyspeptic conditions
are cured.
- Shankha-Prakshalan (Purification
of the Conch): We purify the conch (food pipe, stomach,
small intestine, large intestine, colon and rectum)
by consuming warm water with rock salt and thereafter
repeat four asanas - Bhujangasan, Urdhwa–Hastottanasana,
Katichakrasana and Udarakarsasana.
Note: Shatkarmas should be done under
expert guidance and after learning it properly.
